Medium carbon steels
Only the contents of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur are specified for this steel grade, and the following is to be observed:
- Silicon (Si): 0.60% max;
- Manganese (Mn): 1.65% max;
- Carbon (C): = 0.30% and = 0.50%. The steel grades classified as medium carbon belong to the series SAE 1031 to SAE 1050.
High carbon steels
Only the contents of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur are specified for this steel grade, and the following is to be observed:
- Silicon (Si): 0.60% max;
- Manganese (Mn): 1.65% max;
- Carbon (C): > 0.50%. The steel grades classified as high carbon belong to the series SAE 1055 to SAE 1095.
Alloyed steels
For this steel grade not only the contents of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur are specified, but also other elements, such as chrome, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, boron, etc.
This grade is widely used for manufacturing saws, cutlery sets, tools and farming tools/machines. The same applies to the re-rolling, with emphasis to automobile industry.
